Take the shot
I learned a rather painful lesson today. Or I should say I relearned it. Everyone says it. I’ve heard it too many times to count, but I did it any way.
I hesitated. I sat on what was a great idea with the best of intentions of getting it on paper and presenting it to the right people, and for all my
good intentions I never took the shot. Today I saw someone else’s shot hit the back of the net. The red light is now spinning for them, and I’m left frustrated with myself for not taking the shot. Heck, never getting over the blue line. (For those scratching their heads, these are hockey references.)
It was a really great idea. I had a plan, a goal, and the right skill set to make it happen. I was worried that it would be tough, but I was prepared for that. What I wasn’t prepared to do was to get out of my own way and take the chance. I know there are 1000 examples and metaphors for the same idea, books written on it, and songs sung about it. But I’ll add my voice to the cacophony and say, TAKE THE SHOT!
The worst that can happen is you miss the net, but if the idea really has legs you may be able to snag the rebound and still light the lamp. So, to echo the masses; Go for it! Do it! Shoot! Don’t let fear of failure, fear of criticism, or fear of embarrassment hold you back. And most of all, get out of your own way and take the shot!
